India Reports 14 More Fresh Cases Of New Strain Of Coronavirus, Total 20 Cases have Been Detected So Far As India Steps Up Testing

Fourteen more people in India have been detected with new coronavirus strain, which is 70% more transmissible.

On Tuesday, samples of 6 UK returnees were found to be positive for the new variant genome, with 14 more fresh cases, the authorities said today morning that 20 patients have been infected with the new variant of the coronavirus.

Of the 20 cases of fresh strain,8 have been registered by National Centre For Disease Control(NCDC),a Bengaluru lab has recorded 7 cases, one at the lab in Kalyani(near Kolkata),one in Pune, one at the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology(IGIB) Delhi and two at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology(CCMB) in Hyderabad.

The Indian government has become alert after the new fast spreading Covid strain was discovered in the UK, decided to actively test all returnees who had arrived from the UK before the flight ban.

The government had stated that close contacts of the people infected have been put under quarantine."Comprehensive contact tracing has been initiated for co-travellers,family contact and others".Genome sequencing will also be conducted on all international passengers who were symptomatic and tested positive for coronavirus in the 14 days from December 9 to 22.

"It is easy to suppress the virus in the starting.Once the transmission is too widespread,it is hard to control,"Dr VK Paul,a member of Niti Aayog said at the health ministry briefing on Tuesday.

Civil Aviation minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Wednesday that the Indian government has extended the temporary suspension of flights to the UK till 7 January.

The suspension of flights was announced last week to curtail the spread of the new strain of Covid-19 that was detected in the UK a few days ago.Around 33,000 passengers had landed in various Indian airports from the UK between November 25 and December 23,when flights to and from that country were stopped.

But testing people who have specifically returned from UK may not be enough as the new Covid strain has also spread in many other countries like US,Denmark, the Netherlands,Australia,Italy and Sweden.

The Indian government has now decided to test 5 per cent of all international passengers for the new mutated variant of coronavirus.

The new virus strain has sparked concerns at a time when India awaits a vaccine for the highly infectious disease.A drop in the cases was witnessed after the country saw a peak in the month of September."Vaccines will work against the new variant detected in the UK and South Africa. There is no evidence that current vaccines will fail to protect against these new variants of Covid-19",India's principal scientific advisor said on Tuesday.
