India's Vaccination drive has begun today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched India's vaccination drive against the coronavirus via video conferencing. Over 3 lakh healthcare workers to be inoculated on the first day of the much-anticipated drive against coronavirus which the Centre said is "probably the beginning of the end" of COVID-19. The vaccination drive has been planned in a phased manner, identifying priority groups. Healthcare workers, both in government and private sectors, including Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) workers, will receive the vaccine in the first phase. The first phase of India's coronavirus vaccination drive started at 11 am across several cities in India. A total of 3,006 session sites across all states and UTs were virtually connected during the launch at 10:30 am by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and around 100 beneficiaries were vaccinated at each session site.

A dedicated 24x7 call centre 1075 has also been established for addressing the queries related to the pandemic, vaccine rollout and the CoWIN software, information released by the PMO said.

The Centre has issued guidelines to states and Union territories. It said vaccination is allowed only for those who are above the age of 18 years. Women who are pregnant or not sure of their pregnancy and lactating mothers should not receive the jibe.

Administration of vaccine should be done separately by an interval of 14 days. Second dose should be of the same vaccine of which the first dose was administered, interchanging of vaccines is not allowed.

A technical support team based in Delhi will operate 24x7 to address any issue related to the flagship Co-WIN platform, which will hold real-time information on the vaccination drive, including stocks, storage temperature, and individualized tracking of beneficiaries. Experts will be at hand on the platforms to address everything from technical glitches reported from vaccination sites to any adverse events following immunization. There is a designated Adverse Event Following Immunization Management Centre, to which every session site in the country has been linked.

Two vaccines Oxford Covid vaccine Covishield manufactured by Serum Institute Of India (SII), and indigenously developed Covaxin by the Bharat Biotech will be administered to priority groups. Till now, the Central government has procured 1.1 crore Covishield and 55 lakh Covaxin vaccines at a cost of Rs 200 and Rs 206 per dose, respectively.

On Friday, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan reviewed preparations for the launch of the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination drive. The Union Minister visited the dedicated COVID Control Room which has been set up at the Nirman Bhawan premises of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan said India's exercise to vaccinate its population against COVID-19 will be the largest immunization drive of the world. The Union Minister reiterated that both the indigenously manufactures vaccines, Covishield and Covaxin, have proven safety immunogenicity records and are the most important tools to contain the pandemic.

He stated that adequate doses of both the vaccines have already been delivered across the country to all states and UTs. He also reviewed the working of Co-WIN, the online digital platform developed by the Ministry to be used to drive the vaccination programme.

He, however, cautioned that even if the vaccination drive is on, there should not be lowering of guard and people must follow COVID-19 appropriate behaviour.
