Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose birthday will be celebrated every year as “Parakram Diwas”

The birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, on January 23 will be marked as "Parakram Diwas (Courage Day)", the central government announced today.

"The people of India fondly remember Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's unparalleled contribution to this great nation in his 125th birth anniversary. The Government of India has decided to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary year of Netaji beginning from January 2021 in a befitting manner at the national and international level", the Ministry said.

“Starting from January 2021, every year the occasion will be celebrated to inspire people, especially youth of this country to act with fortitude in the face of adversity as Netaji did, and to infuse in them a spirit of patriotic fervour”, the ministry stated in its gazette statement.

Earlier in January, PM Modi had announced that Centre has constituted a committee to decide on the activities for a year-long commemoration of Netaji's 125th Birth Anniversary starting 23 January 2021. The 85 member committee includes 10 central ministers, seven chief ministers and various actors, musician, cricketer, author, historians, family member of Netaji and INA associates.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, had earlier, wrote to PM Modi seeking the declaration of the national holiday on the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and "take decisive steps to find out what happened to Netaji and place the matter in the public domain".

TMC Lok Sabha member and party spokesperson Saugata Roy said that “Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been demanding for years that January 23 be declared a national holiday and celebrated as Desh Nayak Diwas. That is the appropriate name because Rabindranath Tagore called Bose a desh nayak (national hero). The Modi government takes all decisions unilaterally”.

Reacting to government's decision, Netaji's grandnephew Chandra Kumar Bose welcomed the decision but at the same time said it would have been appropriate if January 23 was declared as 'Deshprem Diwas'.

"Netaji was India's liberator. We welcome the announcement but people have been celebrating January 23 as 'Deshprem Diwas'. It would've been more appropriate, had the government announced it as 'Deshprem Diwas' but we're happy about the announcement," Bose's grandnephew said news agency ANI.

As per media reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit West Bengal on January 23 to attend Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary celebrations at the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata. The PM is also likely to visit National Library located in Belvedere Estate, Alipore.
