Serum Institute of India to partner with Novavax to launch Covovax Covid-19 vaccine by June 2021

Serum Institute of India Chief Executive Officer Adar Poonawalla on Saturday said his company is hopeful of launching Covovax, a vaccine towards the coronavirus illness (Covid-19) which has been developed in partnership with Novavax, by June 2021.

Earlier this week, the Serum Institute sought the Drugs Controller General of India’s approval to conduct a small domestic trial of the Covovax. The vaccine has been found to be 89.3% effective in a trial conducted in the United Kingdom.

Novavax on Thursday released initial results from the trial, which enrolled 15,000 people aged 18 to 84, in the United Kingdom and said that it showed the vaccine to be 89.3% effective in preventing Covid-19. It also said that the vaccine was nearly as effective in protecting against the more highly contagious variant of the coronavirus first discovered in the UK. It also protected against the potent South Africa variant but at a lower rate, the company added.

Poonawalla has said earlier in January Serum Institute of India would manufacture "upwards of 40-50 million doses per month" of the Novavax vaccine from around April. Serum Institute of India's (SII) Covishield, which has been created by Oxford University and AstraZeneca, along with Bharat Biotech's Covaxin is being used by authorities in India for its inoculation drive across the country, which was launched on January 16. The Centre has purchased 11 million doses of the Covishield vaccine. Serum Institute of India (SII) had announced last year that it had received funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to supply around 200 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines in the first half of 2021. This includes doses of both Covishield and another Covid-19 vaccine that it is manufacturing for US-based Novavax.

More than 3.5 million individuals have been vaccinated towards Covid-19 in the country , about 2,06,130 beneficiaries vaccinated till 7 pm today, the Union ministry of health and family welfare said on Saturday.

Today is the 312th day since India implemented a nationwide lockdown to help curb the novel coronavirus pandemic. So far India has recorded 1,07,33,131 with 13,083  new cases in past 24 hours, while the recoveries surged to  1,04,09,160 pushing the national recovery rate to 96.98 per cent.
