"As promised", Musk wrote on twitter. This is the first statement about Tesla's plans for India that Musk has made since the company registered its office in Bengaluru.
Tesla has already appointed three directors: Vaibhav Taneja, Venkatrangam Sreeram and David Jon Fonstein.
According to Times Drive Desk report, Tesla Model 3 is expected to be the company's first launch in India. Tesla Model 3 is a sedan which measures around 4,694 mm in length, which makes it longer than executive sedans like Hyundai Elantra, Skoda Octavia and Honda Civic. This means it offers plenty of space for the occupants and the 425 litres of boot space will be adequate to carry their luggage. But one of the most impressive things about the Model 3 is the interior. The uncluttered dashboard layout conveys a sense of space and the 15-inch touchscreen becomes the command centre to perform different functions and adjust a myriad of settings.
The Model 3 is also loaded to the gills with features like a tinted glass roof, 12-way adjustable seats, heated seats, two wireless charging pads, 15-seaker sound system and a host of advanced driver assistance systems like auto-park, auto lane change, etc. Model 3 has an Autopilot feature that allows the car to drive itself with minimum inputs from the driver. However, this feature is unlikely to be made available on the India-spec model given the regulations and traffic density here.
The Model 3 is powered by a lithium-ion battery with dual electric motors. the standard model offers a driving range of 402.3km/charge and can go from zero to 96.56 km/h in 5.3 seconds. Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD variant, however, can offer a range of almost 518 km on a single charge and can sprint from zero to 96.56 km/h in 4.4 seconds. The Model 3 also has a Performance variant but we seriously doubt if that will be offered in India. And as for charging time, tesla Superchargers can juice up Model 3's battery to cover 281 km in 15 minutes. But a standard charging point is likely to take around 20 hours to completely charge the battery while a 7 kW charger could do so in around 8.5 hours.
Tesla cars will arrive in India via CBU (completely built-up) route, which will make them quite expensive. For reference, the Tesla Model 3 is US starts from $38,000, which is equivalent to Rs. 27.88 lakh. In India, it is expected that Model 3 could cost probably around Rs 60 lakh. the Model 3's bookings in India are expected to start from June 2021.
