India To Start Its Covid-19 Vaccination Drive from January 16, Priority will be given to healthcare workers and frontline workers
The Union Health Ministry on Saturday announced that India will begin its vaccination drive from January 16 after the upcoming festivals such as Lohri, Makar Sakranti, Pongal and Magh Bihu.
The Ministry further stated that, priority will be given to nearly 3 crore healthcare and frontline workers, followed by those people who are above 50 years of age and the under-50 population groups with co-morbidities numbering around 27 crore."PM Modi chaired a high-level meeting to review the status of Covid-19 in the country along with preparedness of the state and union territories (UTs) for Covid-19 vaccination on Saturday. The Prime Minister was also notified about the Co-WIN vaccine delivery management system. The unique digital platform will provide real-time information of vaccine stocks, their storage temperature and tracking of beneficiaries of the Covid-19 vaccine. PM Modi will also interact with the Chief Ministers of all state and representatives of all Union Territories (UTs) on Monday where he will discuss the Covid-19 situation in the country and the Health Ministry's plan of vaccination drive.
This will be PM Modi's first interaction with the Chief Ministers after the approval given to the two vaccines for restricted emergency use by Drug Controller Of India(DCGI).
"The vaccination exercise is underpinned by the principle of people's participation- 'Jan Bhagidari', utilizing experiences of elections- booth strategy and Universal immunization program". the Union Health Ministry said in a statement.
Indian drug regulator has granted the emergency use authorization approval for two vaccines, Serum Institute Of India developed Covishield and Bharat Biotech's Covaxin.
The Health Ministry has also conducted three vaccination dry runs to assess the readiness to start the vaccination drive in India. The first dry run was conducted on December 28 and 29 in four states, second dry run was conducted on January 2 and the third dry run was conducted on January 8.
More than 61,000 programme managers, 2,00,000 vaccinators and 3,70,000 other vaccination team members have been trained so far.
Earlier today, Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan said that India is working towards making low-cost, safe and effective vaccines available to the entire world. He further said that emergency approval to Covaxin and Covishield was given only after checking their effectiveness and safety.
Meanwhile, India's Covid-19 tally of cases climbed to 1,04.31.639 with 18,222 new cases in a day while 1,00,56,651 people have recovered from the virus pushing the recovery rate of the nation to 96.41 per cent on Saturday. There are 2,24,190 active Covid-19 cases in the country which 2.16 per cent of the total cases. And 1,50,850 people have died due to this virus.
Moreover, the country has reported total 90 cases of 'more transmissible' new variant of coronavirus virus.
